Once upon a time, when Mencius was young, his father passed away early, and his mother remained chaste and did not remarry. Initially, they lived next to a cemetery. Mencius would play with the neighborhood children, imitating the adults' kneeling, wailing, and conducting funeral rites. Seeing this, Mencius's mother frowned and said, "No! I cannot let my child live here!" So, Mencius's mother moved with him to the marketplace, near where pigs and sheep were slaughtered. In the marketplace, Mencius again learned and imitated the merchants and the act of slaughtering animals from the neighborhood children. Upon learning this, Mencius's mother frowned again and said, "This place is also not suitable for my child to live in!" So they moved once more. This time, they moved near a school. On the first day of each lunar month, officials would visit the Confucian temple, perform rituals, and treat each other with courtesy, all of which Mencius observed and remembered. Mencius's mother nodded with satisfaction and said, "This is the place where my son should live!" And so they settled there.
